The Lakewood City Council came out unanimously against the Point Defiance bypass as it is presently designed, without grade separations and other safety and traffic measures. Heck, we'd be happy if the state even studied those issues by following the proper process. Take a look at the wording of the resolution and you'll see what I mean.

The vote to demand further study was Monday. The city just put these materials up on the city website, and I share them with you. This sure beats the old days when I was putting up city documents on Yahoo to get them to you.

The truth is, though, what will make or break the Point Defiance Bypass is the state government and the federal government. Your Lakewood City Council has little clout if any with the state Department of Transportation, Gov. Gregoire's budget office and the federal officials deciding on stimulus funding for this project.

At the end of the day, all the community protest is great, but the fate of the project will really rest on all of you asking candidates for Congress and the state Legislature, "Hey, do you think the people of Lakewood should be railroaded?" Hold the incumbents and other candidates accountable for their answer. If enough people do that, there could be safety and justice for Lakewood.
