Come to Pierce College
Next Monday it just might be worth associating with the Lakewood City Council because we go on the road to Pierce College. Those of you who track me on Twitter know I was very impressed a month ago when I went to the dedication of the new math and science building. That's college President Denise Yochum pictured at right during the dedication.Dave Sclair of The Suburban Times prepared a great report and pictures about the new building. His pictures are also a lot better than mine. The page is well worth reading.
The building is very much worth visiting, if you have the time and want to see the latest cool thing in Lakewood. The council will tour the building at 6 p.m. Monday and of course you're welcome to join us. Hopefully the weather will do justice to the great views from the building of Puget Sound and Fort Steilacoom Park. The new building has a variety of energy-saving designs and they're also reclaiming the landscaping that blends into Fort Steilacoom Park for native plants. There's an outdoor rock garden that highlights our region's geology (think gravel as in Gravelly Lake) and indoor gardens with live native plants. This is all about bringing students and visitors in touch with the environment. In fact, the new building does with the environment what our new interpretive program, mentioned in the post below, is doing for Fort Steilacoom Park. I'm looking forward to seeing how other council members, and you, react to the building.
I'm sure there will be signs, but just in case or if you want to stop by on your own, you can find the new Rainier building by taking the main driveway to the left and climbing the hill.
At 7 p.m., the mood may change dramatically as the council has its first workshop on plans for the 2011 budget. You're also welcome to stay for that - it's a rare chance to catch the Lakewood City Council on the Steilacoom side of Lakewood - but there will be many more discussions of the budget in coming months. My regular readers of this blog, both of you, know I tend to write a lot about budgets as it's where we spend tax dollars that really makes city government real to its citizens.
